Afghanistan, Britain's War In Helmand - An Historical Account

"Following the attacks on the United States, the UK deployed military forces in late 2001 to support the Northern Alliance in their assault against the Taliban. This involved cruise missile attacks from Royal Navy submarines against al-Qaeda training bases. In 2002 the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment were sent into Kabul to support Nato's first stabilisation mission. Royal Marines from 45 Commando deployed to Bagram to join the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, agreed to back ISAF's expansion of security into Helmand Province in the south, while UK forces were still engaged in a high intensity operation in Iraq. The initial force into Helmand has been warned for a 'robust' peace support operation. Instead, they found themselves in a bloody 'break in battle' with the enemy."
